Early Access
This app is a brand-new addition to ElfHosted, and is considered beta. It runs, we test it, and your trial lets you prove it fits before you commit, but our support team does not yet have deep experience with it. Expect some trial and error: lean on the upstream documentation, experiment freely, and share what you learn in Discord, where the community and team are figuring these new apps out together. If you need a battle-tested workflow today, our established apps are the safer pick.
What is Grimmory?
Grimmory is a digital library for ebooks, PDFs, comics, and audiobooks. Smart shelves organise your collection with rule-based filtering and full-text search; metadata, covers, and reviews are pulled from Google Books, Open Library, and Amazon (all editable); and a built-in web reader handles EPUBs, PDFs, and comics with annotations, highlights, and progress tracking.
Grimmory is the community continuation of BookLore: when the community moved, it gathered 3,700 stars within four months, and it has since added audiobook support (M4B, M4A, MP3, OPUS) on top of everything BookLore did well.
Key Features
- Every format that matters: EPUB, MOBI, AZW3, FB2, PDF, CBZ/CBR/CB7 comics, and M4B/M4A/MP3/OPUS audiobooks in one library.
- Smart shelves: Custom and dynamic shelves with rule-based filtering, tagging, and full-text search.
- Built-in reader: Read in the browser with annotations, highlights, and reading-progress tracking.
- Device sync: Connect a Kobo, use any OPDS-compatible app, or sync progress with KOReader.
- BookDrop auto-import: Drop files into a watched folder and Grimmory detects, enriches, and queues them for import.
- One-click sharing: Send any book to a Kindle, an email address, or another user, straight from the interface.
- Multi-user: Separate shelves, progress, and preferences per user, with local or OIDC authentication.
Grimmory in Your Stack
Grimmory can be the single home for a reading household: drop new files into its BookDrop folder (FileBrowser makes that easy), read in the browser, and sync to Kobo, KOReader, or Kindle. If you keep audiobooks in Audiobookshelf, Grimmory's audiobook support gives you the option of consolidating, or of running both side by side.
Why Run Grimmory on ElfHosted?
A library is a long-term commitment: years of files, metadata, annotations, and reading progress. ElfHosted keeps all of it running, updated, and backed up while you just read.
- Managed access and support: Provisioned in minutes, kept current with upstream's brisk release pace, with humans on Discord when you need them.
- Plays well with other ElfHosted apps: FileBrowser for BookDrop, Audiobookshelf alongside, and your whole subscription on one dashboard.
- Persistent config: Library, metadata, annotations, users, and progress survive restarts and upgrades.
- Simple subscription: One flat monthly price with a 7-day trial, cancel anytime.
Works With
- Kobo / KOReader: Native device sync, including reading progress.
- Kindle: One-click send-to-Kindle from any book page.
- OPDS apps: Any OPDS-compatible reading app can browse your library.
- FileBrowser: Drop new files into the BookDrop folder from any browser.
- Audiobookshelf: Run alongside, or consolidate audiobooks into Grimmory.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Grimmory the same as Grimoire?
No, and the similar names are a coincidence. Grimoire (also on the ElfHosted store) is a library and campaign manager for tabletop RPG groups: rulebook PDFs, maps, tokens, and session tracking. Grimmory is a general digital library for ebooks, comics, and audiobooks. If your shelves are adventure modules and battlemaps, Grimoire is your app; for everything else you read and listen to, Grimmory is the right place.
How does Grimmory relate to BookLore?
Grimmory is the community continuation of BookLore: the same library foundations, actively developed by the community that moved across, with new capabilities such as audiobook support.
I already use BookLore on ElfHosted. Do I start over?
No. Grimmory migrates your existing BookLore library automatically the first time it starts: database, users, covers, and reading progress all carry across, and you sign in with your existing credentials. Your book files under /storage are shared, so nothing moves or duplicates.
Does Grimmory include any books or audiobooks?
No. Grimmory organises and serves the library you supply: your purchased ebooks, DRM-free files, and audiobooks. It does not provide content.
How do I log in?
Grimmory manages its own accounts (with OIDC support), inside ElfHosted single sign-on. Create your admin account on first access, then add users for the rest of the household, each with their own shelves and progress.
