Pick channels, Tubeling pulls new uploads automatically and writes them to your own rclone-mounted cloud storage (Google Drive, S3, OneDrive, Dropbox, etc.). Description

YouTube without YouTube. Tubeling pulls the channels you actually watch into a persistent media library on your own cloud storage — no algorithm pushing you toward whatever's outraging the internet today, no ads stitched into the middle of a 12-minute video, no "this content is no longer available" the day you want to rewatch something.

What is Tubeling?

Tubeling is a hosted YouTube archiver paired with your choice of Plex, Emby, or Jellyfin. You add the channels you want to follow; Tubeling downloads new videos as they're published, names and tags them with proper metadata, and writes them to your own cloud storage via rclone. Your bundled media server reads from the same mount and presents everything as an ordinary watchable library.

The end result: a personal library of the YouTube channels that matter to you, viewable on every device your media server supports — TV, phone, tablet, browser — without ever opening youtube.com.

What's Included

  • 🎬 Media server (your choice): Plex, Emby, or Jellyfin — bundled, preconfigured, ready to play.
  • 📥 Channel-based downloading: add a YouTube channel URL, Tubeling pulls every new upload automatically.
  • 🏷️ Metadata + thumbnails: videos arrive with titles, descriptions, upload dates, and channel art.
  • 📺 Watch anywhere: any device your media server supports — Apple TV, Android TV, Roku, Fire TV, web, mobile.
  • 🚫 No ads, no algorithm: just the channels you chose, in upload order.

Storage: bring your own cloud

Tubeling does not include media storage. You'll need to bring your own cloud storage mounted via rclone — Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, S3, Backblaze B2, or any of the other backends rclone supports. Tubeling writes downloaded videos to that mount and your media server reads them back.

Setup is documented in the ElfHosted rclone guide. If you're new to rclone, the guide walks you through provider setup, credential handling, and connecting the mount inside your stack. Storage cost (free Google Drive vs paid S3) is your call.

Tubeling vs YouTube

YouTube is fine when you want to stumble on something. Tubeling is for the channels you've already decided you care about.

  • Persistence: if a channel gets demonetised, deleted, or DMCA'd, your archive doesn't vanish.
  • No ads: downloaded files contain the video, not the ad rolls.
  • Family-friendly: what's in your library is what you put there — no "recommended" rabbit-holes for kids.
  • Plays on TVs that hate YouTube: any media-server-compatible device works, no YouTube app required.

Why Run It on ElfHosted?

Self-hosting a YouTube archiver typically means yt-dlp in a cron job, a metadata script that breaks every time YouTube changes its DOM, a separate Plex/Jellyfin/Emby instance to host the result, an rclone mount to keep happy across reboots, and an inevitable round of debugging when a channel requires sign-in to view.

  • yt-dlp is kept up to date by ElfHosted — no "youtube-dl broke again" mornings.
  • The downloader and your media server are wired up together; no manual library refresh dance.
  • Metadata pipeline is preconfigured — channel art, descriptions, upload-date sorting all just work.
  • rclone mount runs alongside the stack; we handle the mount lifecycle, you supply the credentials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a separate Plex / Emby / Jellyfin subscription?
No. One of the three is bundled with Tubeling — pick which at provisioning. Your downloaded YouTube content is read by that bundled media server from your rclone-mounted storage.

Do I need to provide my own storage?
Yes. Tubeling requires user-supplied cloud storage mounted via rclone. See the rclone setup guide. Any rclone-supported backend works (Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, S3, B2, etc.).

Will it download age-restricted or sign-in-gated videos?
yt-dlp's behaviour controls this. If a channel requires login, you can configure cookies — but most public uploads work without intervention.

What happens when a video is removed from YouTube?
Your downloaded copy stays on your cloud storage. Tubeling won't delete files just because YouTube removed the source.

Can I download specific playlists, not whole channels?
Yes. Tubeling supports both channel-level and playlist-level subscriptions.

How much cloud storage will I need?
Depends entirely on what you subscribe to. A 30-minute weekly video at 1080p is about 1GB; a daily news channel might consume 30GB/month. Free Google Drive (15GB) covers light use; for heavier archiving consider paid tiers or S3/B2.

Tubeling is for people who watch a handful of YouTube channels regularly and would rather own that content than depend on YouTube's mood. Bundled Plex/Emby/Jellyfin, automatic downloads to your own cloud storage, proper metadata, no ads, no algorithm.
