Hosted Remux: managed hosting for the Jellyfin-compatible media server that streams on demand instead of building a download library first.
What is Remux?
Remux is a media server that speaks the Jellyfin API, so the Jellyfin apps you already use on mobile, TV, and web connect to it as if it were Jellyfin itself. Instead of importing a library of downloaded files, Remux resolves streams on demand from WebDAV shares, HTTP addon sources, and local storage, transcoding on the fly when a client needs it.
Remux does not provide media. It orchestrates user-supplied sources: your WebDAV shares, your addon sources, and your own files.
Experimental Early Preview
Remux is an experimental Early Preview app. The upstream project is young and fast-moving, so expect rough edges, rapid change, and occasional breakage while it matures.
Torrent and P2P functionality is not supported. The ElfHosted build removes the torrent engine entirely at build time: magnet links are rejected and no peer-to-peer connections are possible. Use WebDAV, HTTP addon, and local sources only.
Direct play only - no transcoding. Streams go straight from their source to your player, which keeps playback fast and your instance lean, but your device must decode the format natively. Native Jellyfin apps (TV, mobile, desktop) play nearly everything including HEVC and 4K; web browsers need AVC/H.264 streams. Picking an incompatible stream shows a short explainer video with guidance instead of an error.
Key Features
- Jellyfin-compatible API: Connect the Jellyfin apps you already use on mobile, TV, and web.
- Stream on demand: No library import step. Remux resolves streams from your configured sources when you press play.

- On-the-fly transcoding: Bundled ffmpeg transcodes when a client cannot direct-play.
- Admin dashboard: Manage sources, users, and playback settings from the web UI.
Why Run Remux on ElfHosted?
- Managed web access with the usual ElfHosted support path.
- Works neatly beside your ElfHosted storage mounts and media stack.
- Persistent configuration for day-to-day use.
- Simple monthly subscription with trial option.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Remux a Jellyfin fork?
No. Remux is its own server that implements the Jellyfin API, so Jellyfin clients can connect to it. It streams from configured sources on demand rather than serving an imported library.
Does Remux include media?
No. The subscription is for managed Remux hosting. You bring your own sources and are responsible for what you configure.
Can I use torrents or magnet links?
No. The hosted build has the torrent engine removed entirely. Magnet and torrent requests are rejected, and no P2P connections are possible.
Does Remux transcode?
No. Hosted Remux is direct play only. Use a native Jellyfin app for the widest format support, or choose AVC/H.264 streams when watching in a browser.
Why is Remux marked experimental?
Upstream Remux is young and moves quickly. ElfHosted offers it as an Early Preview so enthusiasts can try it, with the understanding that things may change or break between releases.
Can I switch another ElfHosted subscription to Remux?
Yes. Remux is available in the Switch Your Subscription product.
